What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of flexible fibres that are heat and flame-resistant. Due to its extraordinary properties, asbestos was widely used in thousands of products for applications such as insulation materials, roof panels and brake linings.

The material doesn’t pose a health risk if left undisturbed. However, when chipped, broken, drilled, or in a deteriorated state, it can release a cloud of dust that contains asbestos fibres. Asbestos exposure is hazardous to health when the fibres are inhaled. They can give rise to asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer, asbestosis (a lung disease) and mesothelioma.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) cautions that there is no safe level of exposure that can prevent you from developing an asbestos-related condition. But those most at risk are workers who have been exposed to asbestos fibres over long periods.

There are six types of asbestos that are split into two categories: Amphibole and serpentine.

Amphibole Asbestos

  • Crocidolite – also known as blue asbestos
  • Tremolite
  • Amosite – also known as brown asbestos
  • Actinolite
  • Anthophyllite

Amphibole asbestos fibres have a straight, jagged shape.

Serpentine Asbestos

  • Chrysotile -also known as white asbestos

Serpentine asbestos fibres are curly.

In 2003, asbestos was banned in Australia. According to the law, it is illegal to store, supply, import, sell, install, use or re-use asbestos materials. But it is not a problem of the past. The dangerous material is still present in many buildings in the country.

The only form of asbestos currently mined is chrysotile (white asbestos). According to WHO, it can also cause severe diseases like lung cancer. It is banned in Australia and many other countries. However, it is still used in limited quantities in the United States.

Asbestos In The Home And Workplace

There are several laws and compliance codes covering asbestos in the workplace. For example, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017. You can read them here.

If you think there is asbestos in your home, you should have it inspected by a licenced professional. The Victoria State Government has an interactive tool to help you find and identify asbestos in the home.

Licence Types

There are two types of asbestos removal licences:

  • Class A

This authorises the removal of any type of friable asbestos. Friable asbestos can be turned to powder by touch or is easily crumbled. Class A licence holders are also authorised to perform class B removal work.

  • Class B

This authorises the removal of more than ten square metres of non-friable asbestos. This is asbestos that cannot be damaged by the human hand and is unlikely to release harmful fibres into the air. It also authorises the taking away of any debris associated with the removal of non-friable asbestos. However, a class B licence doesn´t authorise the removal of friable asbestos.

Asbestos Testing

We are proud to be an asbestos testing service Melbourne homeowners and businesses trust. Our asbestos testing service will give a definitive answer as to whether you have asbestos-containing materials on your property.

NO1 Asbestos Removal Melbourne’s highly trained professionals will inspect your home or business premises for signs of asbestos. We’ll take a small sample of any suspicious-looking material and send it to our partner National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)-accredited lab for analysis. When the results come back, we’ll inform you immediately.

Asbestos Removal

Whether you’re purchasing an older home and need an asbestos removal service or have discovered the hazardous material on your property, we’re here to help. We are qualified and licenced to remove all types of asbestos-containing materials no matter where they’re located on a property. For example, ceilings, floors, garages, sheds, eaves and gutters.

NO1’s asbestos removal teams arrive on time, work quickly and decontaminate areas once the asbestos has been removed. Our expertise and proven methods combined with cutting-edge equipment ensure no asbestos-containing materials remain.

Asbestos Disposal

We will remove any friable and non-friable asbestos from your property. Our vehicles are licenced to carry asbestos waste, and we dispose of it in facilities approved by the Victoria State Government. We dispose of waste safely, ensuring nobody is exposed to any toxic substances.

Decontamination

We decontaminate sites and ensure they’re 100% safe after every asbestos removal project. Our teams follow strict health and safety guidelines at all times.

Asbestos Site Demolition

Partial or whole building demolitions risk releasing dangerous asbestos fibres into the air. Before buildings are demolished, we can conduct a comprehensive asbestos survey and send sample materials to a NATA-accredited lab. If the presence of asbestos is confirmed, we can remove it safely.

Notifications and Clearance Certificates

After asbestos removal work has been completed, we take care of all notifications and certifications. A clearance certificate verifies that the building is safe for normal use.
